5 Ways To Choose The Best Guitar Teacher For You: A Beginners Guide
In this lesson, we are going to learn 5 ways to choose the best guitar teacher for you. When it comes to your journey of learning to play the guitar, you want to find the best guitar teacher for you.
Take some time to think. Decide what you are interested in learning. Why you are interested in learning it and what you hope to accomplish. Why? because not all teachers are the same.
Not all teachers are the same
Even if you have two teachers who teach the same subject, their methods, theories, and philosophies are going to be different. So if you are serious about learning to play the guitar and serious about acquiring guitar lessons, I recommend you do some research.
When I was looking for the right one for me, I went to a few different ones. I wanted to make sure I liked their personality and that they understood what I wanted to learn. This was very important to me. What I learned through this process, was that not all teachers are the same.
Consider what you want to learn
This is a big deal when it comes to learning to play guitar and finding the right teacher. If you want to learn to play Jazz guitar, you don’t need someone who plays Rock guitar. Although there is Jazz in Rock style music, it would not be the best teacher to choose.
You would be better off finding a good solid teacher who specializes in Jazz guitar and Only Jazz guitar. This kind of teacher is going to give you focus, determination, and insights from Jazz that a Rock guitar teacher won’t be able to give.
Browse teacher profiles
Once you have figured out what you want to learn, you need to start looking for the right instructor. The type that is going to give you the right music education. As I stated before, if you know what you are looking to learn, it will make this process much easier.
Check out their profiles. What are their backgrounds? How long have they been teaching? What kind of testimonials do they have? Looking into all these things is going to help you to make a well-informed decision.
I found this to be very helpful when I was on my journey of looking for the right instructor for my interests. Looking over their profiles can make a huge difference and is highly recommended.
Look into the teacher’s teaching style
How does the teacher go about distributing their style of education? Are they starting you where you are at the beginning? Are they willing to teach you what you want to learn? Do they have certain guidelines you need to follow? Do they have a certain way of doing things?
All this can make a huge difference in whether you stick with them in the long run. I ran into this problem myself when I was younger. I had certain things I wanted to learn and the teachers I went to had other ideas of what they thought I should know.
This was not good for me, and ultimately I quit. I don’t teach like that. I teach my students what they want to learn and help them to progress in the direction they choose. This keeps them enjoying their lessons and sticking with them longer over time.
Take a close look at your schedule
One of the things I’ve noticed with people wanting to learn to play the guitar is that they don’t realize the time it takes. They have unrealistic expectations about how much time they will need to put in daily.
Remember, when you approach learning to play an instrument, you need to do physical things as well as acquire a mental understanding of certain concepts and techniques.
That is why the time and effort needed must be consistent. Be diligent, develop patience, and realize the amount of time it will take and make sure you have the time necessary.
Look at your financial budget
Taking private lessons will cost money. Even group lessons will cost. As they should for the skill that you are learning. So you want to look at your financial budget to see what you can afford.
Private lessons will allow you will spend one-on-one time with the instructor. This is a great way to learn because you can get professional insights from the teacher. Also, the right teacher will customize the lessons to your ability and skill sets. This will allow you to progress faster.
Group lessons are a great option as well as you get to learn with other people at the same time. This is a great option for some as it is a lot less expensive than private guitar lessons. The downside, is you don’t get the option of one-on-one with the teacher.
Learning Guitar Online
Another great option that is very popular today is learning to play the guitar online. You can learn for free on YouTube by watching tons of videos from a lot of different teachers, or you can learn inexpensively from an online course. Almost all online guitar teachers provide this option.
