These are an excellent tool for playing guitar. They can be used in multiple ways. For playing rhythm guitar and lead guitar.
What are the modes?
The modes are scale patterns based on all 7 notes within the major scale. There are 7 notes to the major scale, which means there are 7 modes.
The C major scale: C D E F G A B C
If we give these notes a number value, you can see there are 8 notes. With the 1 & 8 being the same. So technically, there are only 7 notes. C through B.
These modes are Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, and Locrian. As you can see, there are 7 of these. One for each note in the major scale.

Are the modes the same as a scale?
Yes and no. What I mean is, that they are scales because they are a select series of notes. Just like a scale. But what separates the modes from scales is that they’re are only 7 of them.
When it comes to scales, there are many of them. But modes are specifically 7 scales that come from the notes within the major scale. The Do Re Mi.
