Unlock Your Full Potential By Setting S.M.A.R.T Guitar Goals
In this lesson, we are going to unlock your full potential by setting S.M.A.R.T. guitar goals. In doing so you are going to take your guitar playing to the next level.
The easiest way to do that is to learn what S.M.A.R.T. means and how it can help you to not only improve your guitar playing but also your life.
S stands for Specific
The first thing you want to do when you learn guitar is think about what you want to accomplish. And the best way to find the answer to this question is to be specific.
What specifically are you trying to accomplish with your guitar playing? This is tep #1. You must figure out specifically what it is to the point you can see it in your mind.
Is it playing rhythm? Strumming chords and whatnot. Is it improving your lead guitar playing? Creating face-melting guitar solos.
Or possibly you want to learn about guitar theory. Figuring out all the reasons why things are the way they are in music.
Whatever it is, you need to figure out what you want to accomplish with your guitar playing and be specific.
M stands for Measurable.
Now that you know what you want to accomplish, you must figure out if it is measurable. Can you measure your progress?
Think about a football team. What are they trying to do? Make a touchdown, or get to the goal if you will. For them to do that, they need to do two things.
-
Move the ball forward toward the goal
-
Measure their results of har far they have to go to get there.
In a sense, you are doing the same thing. You need to think about the steps necessary to get you where you want to go. How many hours are required? How many steps are needed?
Make sure you can measure your results. This will keep you on track and keep you motivated to keep going.
A Stands for Attainable
Now that you have those two things figured out, you want to make sure that what you are after is attainable. Is it within your grasp? Is it something that you have time to pursue?
You must take a close look at the time you have to pursue your dream. The amount of effort it will take to get there and if you truly have what it takes. Is it something that you can accomplish?
If there is any doubt in your mind, then you probably won’t stick with it long enough to get there. Make sure it is something that you can reach within your abilities.
R Stands for Relevant
Are the actions you are taking to get there relevant? Are they helping you get to get closer to your goal? Let’s take the music theory analogy, you must be reading and writing out notes and chord diagrams to be moving toward that goal.
Make sure you are not taking timely breaks, and messing around. Those actions are not relevant. They are not actions that are moving you forward.
You must make sure that the actions that you’ve decided to take are moving you forward. If you want to get better at playing lead guitar, what actions are relevant to getting you there? This is how you set S.M.A.R.T. guitar goals.
T Stands for Time-bound
How long is it going to take you to get there? You must have a way to determine this. When you can break down your desire into smaller increments, you can answer this question more clearly.
Let’s take football as an analogy. When it comes to football, they know exactly how long they have to win the game. There is a time clock. They also have so many downs, so many quarters and so much time.
This allows them to do all that we have stated here. Be specific about their goal. Be able to measure their progress by what down they are on and field position.
Since the goal is only 100 yards down the field, they can see that they can attain it. They also know what actions are needed to get there, and lastly, how much time they have to accomplish winning the game.
